Pearl's Deluxe Burgers + MTT and the SFS

Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers + MTT and the SFS

This blog is called The Art of Cleaning Your Plate because I always try to eat everything I’m served, especially if I see no clean way of packing it up to eat later. In this episode, I believe it might have been better if I had just left the remainder of the burger in the basket, and not crammed it all into my belly. But, it just tasted so good! Anyways, here’s the story:

Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers: I’d been dying to try this place ever since I read their milkshake menu. So, since I was planning on going to Davies Symphony Hall to see MTT conduct Mahler’s 3rd Symphony for the last time this season, I thought it’d be an AMAZING idea to go get Pearl’s right before. I ordered the Phat Bob, which comes with cheese, a 1/4 pound patty, onion rings, omg delicious bacon, bbq sauce and mayo. And yes, to reiterate, I ate the whole thing along with just about my entire wild cherry milkshake and some fries.

BIG MISTAKE.

When you mix this type of deliciousness:

The Phat Bob with his friend, Pickle. Yeah, Bacon's in there, too.

With this type of cultured, solemn event:

Davies Symphony Hall. Nosebleed Seats.

You WILL fall asleep. Don’t even fight it. In fact, I think I slept through the whole second movement, and it (the nap) was glorious once I gave into it.

The percussion and the horns in the 3rd movement definitely woke me up, and just in time for me to see everyone give MTT and the SFS a standing ovation. I wasn’t completely knocked out the whole time, though, and when I did get a chance to look around during the show, I think much of the audience had also nodded off at least once during the performance. Hooray! I wasn’t the only one! But that got me to thinking–why does the symphony get a standing house when just about everyone in it had fallen asleep? Were the bits people were awake for THAT good?

Curious, indeed. I’ll be going back to the symphony on October 14 to hear James Conlon conduct Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Shostakovich’s 14th Symphony. (Go Russians!) Hopefully, I’ll stay awake this time and will be able to confidently give the performance a standing ovation. I will find the perfect pre-concert food and report back. Although, maybe I should just get a shot of espresso and hope for the best.

NOTES

Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers will be opening a new location on Market Street and 6th Street soon. For all you lucky people downtown, be sure to pay them a visit! If you’re feeling kind, please bring one to SOMA for me. kthxbye!
